Guide to the Eugene L. Armbruster Photograph Collection 1894-1939 PR-081
New York photographer and local historian born in Baden-Baden, Germany; emigrated to the United States 1882 and lived in Brooklyn, New York. Armbruster photographed historic houses, churches, streetscapes, and buildings throughout New York City, and some of the images he created served to illustrate pamphlets he wrote on the local history of the area.

The collection consists of Andreas Feininger's depictions of New York City from 1939 through 1954, and the 1970s through early 1980s. 1940s views depict Times Square, Fifth Avenue, elevated railroads, the Brooklyn Bridge, the waterfront and river traffic, shops and shop owners in a variety of neighborhoods, and a variety of street, park, and skyline views. 1970s and 1980s views depict graffiti, signs, murals, posters, billboards, reflections, water tanks, fire escapes, and especially the Times Square area with its characteristic erotic film venues and advertisements.

Views include work areas, as well as leisure areas for employees, and special events such as public service projects. Photos also show street scenes of the city. The albums contain clippings and other items documenting the company and its public relations.

Photographs of private homes, apartment buildings, churches, memorials, World's Fair exhibits, and competition drawings are also included.

The Samuel Gilford Papers consist of documentation of the business dealings and personal life of sea captain and shipping merchant Samuel Gilford, of New York, as well as his son, Samuel Gilford Jr., and various other members of the Gilford family. Included in this collection are loose papers related to the firm of Thomas Buchanan and Son, as well as personal papers of the Buchanan family. This collection also contains papers and ephemera from the late 19th and early 20th centuries related to the Anna Riker and members of the Riker family.
